Sterile and Green? Hospitals Targeted for Environmental Makeovers

Hospitals may be well known for sterile environments, but soon they may be known for being green as well. Currently the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit of community leaders dedicated to creating green buildings, is developing a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System for health care. “Hospitals are the most challenging building type to make sustainable, but they also present some of the biggest opportunities for designers,” says Jean Mah, a principal at architecture firm Perkins + Will. “The potential benefits to people and the environment are so high.”
“Fast Company” designed its own green hospital, nifty visual included. From its 80-foot long tunnel washing machines, solar panels, on-site power plant, and rooftop garden (one order of nature – stat!), this futuristic building may help patients forget for a second that they’re in a hospital. Now if only the cafeteria food could be tasty as well as environmentally friendly….
