About SonarMed
SonarMed was founded in 2005 to commercialize technology licensed from Purdue University to improve the placement and monitoring of endotracheal (breathing) tubes (also known as ETTs or artificial airways) which are used in patients who cannot breathe on their own.
The technology was initially developed at Purdue University by SonarMed founders Jeffrey Mansfield, Eduardo Juan and George Wodicka, using the principles of acoustic reflectometry in tubes to provide the medical community with a more comprehensive approach to assist in the maintenance of breathing tubes.
The company’s first product—the SonarMed Airway Monitoring System (AMS)—is a non-invasive, adjunctive device that provides direct, precise, real-time monitoring of breathing tube position and function, which may aid in detecting potentially dangerous or fatal breathing tube conditions. This novel technology may help reduce breathing tube-related risks, complications and costs and thereby improve patient safety and quality of care.
The SonarMed AMS development was aided by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health and the Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund.
