Innovation Series Event: Defeating Alzheimer’s

Conference Dates: Dec 14, 2011
Cambridge, MA[edit Location]
MIT Enterprise Forum
Alzheimer’s Disease devastates the lives of 25-40 million people worldwide — a number that is projected to quadruple in the coming decades. There are currently no FDA-approved medicines that can significantly modify the course of the disease. There is no effective means for early detection and diagnosis. Furthermore, neurodegeneration is among the mostly costly and risky areas of drug development. Yet, the high risk is balanced by high reward, and today Alzheimer’s is both an area of tremendous scientific promise and an exciting business opportunity.
As companies of all sizes make significant commitments to neurodegeneration, researchers have made breathtaking progress in understanding the disease mechanism.
At this event we’ll hear from two people leading the charge:
* Dan Skovronsky from Avid Radiopharmaceuticals, a startup that recently sold for over $300 million
* Mark Shearman from EMD Serono, representing the large company perspective
Dan and Mark will head an all-star panel of those engaged in funding, supporting and conducting R&D efforts in academia, industry and startups. Together they’ll provide a full 360 view of the Alzheimer’s battle.
Speakers:
Tim Armour, President and CEO, Cure Alzheimer’s Fund
Kiran Reddy, Principal, Third Rock Ventures
Mark Shearman, Vice-President, Global Head Parkinson’s disease & Alzheimer’s disease research at EMD Serono Research Institute
Dan Skovronsky, Founder and CEO, Avid Pharmaceuticals
